Autumn is all about feeling cozy and comfortable. Once the weather starts cooling down, we all want to pull out our sweaters and blankets and spend more time relaxing. Whether you’re spending your days at apple orchards, pumpkin patches, or you’re at home watching your favorite Halloween movies, there are some things that just feel like fall that you need to do each year. Many people look forward to the classic fall flavors in their favorite food or drinks, in addition to all the seasonal events and activities. Few things feel better than enjoying a rich, seasonal meal or holding onto a warm mug of your favorite drink.
Fall cocktails are the perfect way to warm up and enjoy some of the best flavors the season has to offer. This fall, try out these three fall drinks.
Mulled Wine
Mulled wine is one of the most classic cold-weather drinks you can find and has been a staple for many people for years. Not only will the warmth of this drink provide some comfort, but it also has all the flavors you want on a cool, crisp fall day. This is also the perfect drink to make for get-togethers this season, as it can easily be made in large batches.
To start out, you’ll need one bottle of your favorite dry red wine. Combine the red wine with one orange cut into slices, two cinnamon sticks, three star anise, and four to eight cloves in a medium saucepan. Bring this to a bowl, and then let it simmer for ten minutes. You can also add your preferred sweetener, such as sugar or honey, to taste. Serve the wine while still warm and add garnishes like additional cinnamon sticks, apple slices, berries, star anise, or orange slices.
You can also modify this to make it more your taste, like using a dry white instead of a red, or adding some of your favorite fruit juices.
Pumpkin White Russian
Fall isn’t complete for most people without having at least one pumpkin-flavored drink during the season. There are plenty of ways to incorporate this into drinks, but a white Russian is a great choice.
You can make a pumpkin white Russian the same way you would make a regular one, except with pumpkin pie creamer instead of heavy cream. Combine two ounces of vodka with one ounce of coffee liqueur and one ounce of pumpkin pie creamer. Serve this drink over ice.
There are a few ways you can garnish your pumpkin white Russian for a more seasonal fall look. You can cover the rim of the glass in cookie or graham cracker crumbs or add a cinnamon stick. To make it feel more like pumpkin pie, you can put a dollop of whipped cream on top and sprinkle some pumpkin pie spice over it.
Apple Cider Hot Toddy
In terms of beloved fall flavors, apple is right up there with pumpkin. A hot toddy is another warm cocktail that’s a favorite during the fall and winter, but this version is even more fitting for fall. You can use whatever apple cider you can find in the grocery store or apple cider you picked up on your recent apple picking trip.
First, simmer five ounces of apple cider with a teaspoon of lemon juice, two teaspoons of honey, and a cinnamon stick in a medium saucepan. You can adjust the amount of lemon and honey if you prefer your drink more or less sweet. Once this is simmering, put it into a glass and add two ounces of one of the bourbons you can find in our popular bourbon selection.
If you want, you can garnish this drink with star anise, a cinnamon stick, or apple slices.
