Best Drinks to Bring to a Summer BBQ

Many of us spend most of our weekends during the summer throwing or attending BBQs. A nice cookout with friends and family is the perfect way to spend a warm summer day. Not only do you get to spend quality time with your loved ones playing outdoor games, swimming, or just sitting and relaxing, but you also get to eat classic BBQ foods. We wait all year to enjoy our favorite cookout meals, and none of them are complete without the right drink to accompany it.

If you want to be a great cookout guest this summer, here are a few drink ideas for your next summer BBQ.

Sangria

The perfect summer BBQ drink is one filled with fresh fruits, which makes Sangria a great choice. Sangria can be made in a large batch, making it the perfect cool, fruity, drink for a summer day. It includes easy to find ingredients, including wine, sparkling water, sweetener, and fruit. There are also dozens of different Sangria recipes, so you can make one that you know everyone will love. You can use red or white wine depending on your preference, and load it up with your favorite fruit, such as peaches, apples, oranges, and pineapples.

Vodka and Lemonade

Lemonade is one of the most popular summer drinks. While a glass of lemonade is great on its own, it’s also perfect for mixing with vodka to create a refreshing summertime drink. All you need to make this simple mixed drink is your favorite vodka, maybe even a flavored one, and fresh or store-bought lemonade. You can also do this with pink lemonade, limeade, or any of your favorite fruit juice. If you want to put in a small amount of extra effort, you can even cut up lemons, other fruits, or fresh herbs to enhance the taste.

A Bottle of Rosé

Not all BBQ drinks require multiple ingredients or any mixing. A simple bottle of rosé will be gladly welcomed at any cookout or party you attend this summer. Many wines make a great addition to any cookout, but rosé, in particular, is an ideal summertime wine. A cold glass of rosé is light and crisp, which is exactly what most people are looking for while sitting outside in warm weather.

Mojitos

Mojitos are a common summer cocktail and are incredibly refreshing, so this is something you should make on the next hot day when you have a BBQ to go to. You can easily make mojitos with rum, club soda, limes, mint wedges, and a little bit of sugar. Lime gives mojitos the tart taste many people want in a summer drink, while mint gives it the freshness you need after spending a day in the sun. You can also make the drink your own by adding fruits like blackberries, strawberries, and pineapples.

Alcoholic Floats

A cold desert at a BBQ is a must. If you’re looking for a way to cool down and enjoy something sweet, you can do this by making alcoholic floats. These are just like the ice cream floats we all enjoyed as children, but are mixed with some of your favorite bubbly alcohol. For a drink that’s also a desert, take a bubbly drink, like prosecco, and add in a few scoops of your favorite flavor of sorbet.

Shandy

When you attend a summer BBQ, you can’t go wrong by bringing beer. Almost everyone at any summer event will enjoy this. There are plenty of beers to choose from to bring to a cookout, but a shandy is a great choice to enjoy in sunny, warm weather. A shandy is beer mixed with lemonade, which makes it the perfect summer beer. Shandy also has the benefit of being an incredibly easy drink to bring to a BBQ, since you don’t have to do any of the mixing yourself, so you can just enjoy the company of the party.

Margaritas

Few drinks feel as summer appropriate as a margarita. The main alcohol in a margarita is tequila, but you’ll also need orange liqueur to make margaritas. In addition to these two alcohols, you’ll also need lime juice and simple syrup. Since making a margarita is more involved than other mixed drinks, many people simply buy premade margarita mix that can make a margarita with just tequila. While margaritas are typically lime-flavored, which is already a great summer flavor, you can add juices and fruits as you see fit. Don’t forget to salt the rim of the glass you’re drinking from.

Pina Coladas

Pina Coladas have all the flavors you could want in a summer drink. You can get the great summer taste of a Pina Colada by mixing rum, frozen pineapples, pineapple juice, and coconut cream with ice. Like a margarita, pina coladas call for multiple ingredients and more work than you might want to put in at a party. Rather than make pina coladas from scratch, there are mixes that only require you to add rum to have a Pina Colada.

Cool Down With Summer Wines!

Check out some of our favorite white wines and food pairings to have at the pool or beach side.

Warm weather, lots of sunshine, sunning on a towel with a fresh breeze (dreaming over here) and a  crisp wine, – the necessities for a perfect summer. Below, we’re going to give you the low down on the best foods to pair with our favorite types of summer wines.

We will also dispel the myth that only white wines classify as a refreshing summer treat.  By the time you’ve ready this article, you will be a solid wine guru. Get ready to impress your friends with the art of wine pairing (you’re welcome).

Wine 101: Six Basic Wine Tastes

Before we can start this wine pairing journey, the basics need to be learned. Once you learn the basics of wine tastes, you can master what food pairs well.

Six tastes of wine:

  • Acid
  • Bitter
  • Fat
  • Piquant (Spiciness)
  • Salt
  • Sweet

First rule of thumb when learning about wine tastes: acid, bitter, and spice clash with one another.  For example, never pair bitter foods with acidic wines.  It is also wise to remember that the other three tastes – fat, salt, and sweet all complement one another.

It is uncommon to find wine that contains flavors of fat, saltiness or spice; this means that you can incorporate those notes through food.  When it comes to the other three flavors, red wines contain more bitterness, white and rosé wines tend to be more acidic and obviously sweet wines are sweet. Understanding these varying tastes is a major step in comprehending wine and food pairing.

Second rule of thumb, wine and food pairing rely heavily on contrasting tastes. For example, a zesty white wine such as pinot grigio complements the fat and cream found in a baked macaroni. Congruent pairings will match taste with taste; for example, if you were to take the same baked mac and cheese and pair it with a creamy chardonnay.

Summer White Wine and Food Pairing

PINOT GRIGIO/PINOT GRIS

Seriously, this wine goes with just about everything, all the time, including nothing, which is sometimes a fine option, too.  If you plan on enjoying some fresh seafood, pinot gris is always a safe and delicious option because it pairs well with seafood regardless of the vintage or region.

Pairs perfectly with:

  • Your favorite backyard BBQ, including pork
  • Seafood (think buttery grilled lobster) with roasted vegetables, even asparagus
  • Lemon chicken!

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Another EASY choice, open a bottle of sauvignon blanc at the next barbeque. It’s super food-friendly—if you aren’t feeling seafood, it pairs very well with chicken. This wine is creamy, spicy, acidic, and soft. Pay attention to the flavor profiles to get an extra delicious pairing.

Pairs perfectly with:

  • Sushi
  • Grilled and roasted vegetables (in pasta or on their own)
  • Various Thai food dishes teeming with spice or citrus profiles

CHARDONNAY

This is the most challenging of white wines to pair with a food.  It is has soft and delicate taste that can easily be overwhelmed by your food choice, strong flavors and fried foods are a definite NO!. Pair the buttery wine with other rich and mild flavors.

When thinking of food pairing for chardonnay, think fresh and vibrant, with hints of  acidity like Baja fish tacos. (yum!)

Pairs perfectly with:

  • Butter-poached lobster or crab
  • Tomato-based dishes
  • Lighter preparations of poultry like chicken or Caesar salad
  • Seared tuna, tartare

  • 1 ounce of lime juice
  • 4 ounces of sparkling water

  • 1.5 ounces of mint leaves
  • 10.5 ounces of sugar
  • 4 ounces of sparkling water
  • 1 shot of vodka

  1. Cut the cucumbers in half and remove the seeds.
  2. Put the cucumber, ginger and mint in the juice processor to extract all the juice, add the sugar and mix.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of vodka per liter of syrup.

Preparation

  1. Pour the syrup into a tumbler glass with ice.
  2. Add the sparkling water and stir.

Garnish with a slice of cucumber, slice of lime and pineapple leaves.

Spicy Pineapple Shandy

Ready in 6 minutes
Serves 1 cocktail
Recipe adapted from:  The Spruce Eats

Ingredients

  • ½  ounce of jalapeno simple syrup
  • 1 ounce of tequila
  • ½ ounce lemon juice (fresh)
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • 6 ounces beer (pale ale, to fill)

Preparation

  1. In a pint glass, combine the jalapeno syrup, tequila and fruit juices. Stir well.
  2. Fill the glass with ice (if desired) and to off with the pale ale.
  3. Serve and enjoy in a frosty glass!

Tips

  • Jalapeño simple syrup is very easy to make at home. You will need a raw sugar such as turbinado, two peppers, and a cup of water. It takes just 20 minutes but will need to cool before you mix with it.
  • Fresh lemon juice is best. The average lemon yields 1 3/4 ounces of juice, so one fruit is more than enough for a few shandies. You can even simply squeeze a lemon wedge directly into the drink.
  • A silver (blanco) tequila is an excellent choice for this shandy. Yet, it is really interesting with the slight oakiness found in a reposado tequila.
  • If your beer and juices are cold, there’s really no need to add ice.
